What is 3D printing?

A 3D printer is a device that creates objects from plastic by melting a filament and depositing it layer by layer. A 3D printer is ideal for hobbies, design prototyping, product development, art and production work. You can download designs for printing from a web site such as ThingiVerse, or create your own designs on your computer.

3D printer objects may be combined with other techniques to create interesting ready-use objects, designs, art or engineering prototypes.

Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with this technology by watching this time-lapse video of a 3D printer in action. The printer is a FabX3 by 3ding.

What can I make with a 3D printer?

Below is a selection of the thousands of things that you can make with a 3D printer. You are only limited by your imagination!

How do I learn to make with a 3D printer?

A 3D printer is contains some very advanced technology and may take considerable time and effort to fully master. However, a novice can get started quickly making basic objects using the available wealth of on-line resources . Here are some links to get you started:

  • Thingiverse: a site where thousands of 3D designers come to share their ideas. Contains free downloadable designs.
  • Youtube: as always, a go-to resource for someone that want to learn a new skill.
  • Ultimaker: This is the home page of a manufacturer of excellent 3D printers, with good community and design support.
tekSPACY offers a programme for novice makers that want to learn 3D printing. You shall recieve guidance throughout the learning process from a skilled maker, with the eventual aim of creating and printing your own designs. Join tekSPACY and explore the possibilities of this growing international community.

Start by learning

Learn the different aspects of printing a 3D object with PLA filament under the guidance of a tekSPACY maker. This includes printer calibration, preparation of your design file and finishing the completed print. You shall also be required to know and practice the tekSPACY safety rules.

l

Design

A tekSPACY maker will get you started on the path to get use a 3D design application such as 123Design. You shall modify an existing design or create a new design from scratch. At the end of this phase you should be able to print, display and use your design.

Make your own

At this point you shall have received maker status for 3D printing. You shall be able to make and sell your 3D printed designs without supervision.
